Typical plate of the Alcora chinoiserie style, polychromed in green, yellow, orange and blue. Fantastic bird in the centre with groups of flowering branches and insects typical of the chinoiserie style.

Chinese Style 1735-1755

  • Tin-glazed earthenware

  • Diam. 39cm

Decorated in blue chiaroscuro, it presents the characteristic motifs of the chinoiserie series: birds, oriental and grotesque characters, insects and flowery branches. It shows the influence of Dutch manufactures in the distribution of the compartmentalized brim. Signed on the back and in blue “Soliba” by Miguel Soliva, painter from Alcora, who died in 1755.

Tray: chinese scene

ALCORA

Hacia 1735-1760

Oval tray with molded edge, decorated in chiaroscuro blue. Central scene composed of a landscape with trees and buildings and, in the foreground, two characters holding a stick and a parasol respectively. Around it, birds and insects, highlighting for its rarity a species of winged snail. Floral bouquets and other smaller complementary motifs hang from the edge.

Plate: Blue bird and insects

ALCORA

Hacia 1735-1760

Decoration in blue monochrome, with a composition similar to that of another plate from the Laia Bosch collection, of the National Ceramic Museum of Valencia. The border of the wing of the plate, with lobed brackets, could correspond to the decoration that in the Royal Factory was called “Dutch lace”. In the solero, framed by various circular profiles, the characteristic scene of a wading bird between insects and branchy motifs.

Plate: 3 hybrid birds

ALCORA

Hacia 1735-1760

Plate with an unusual two-tone profile consisting of a thick blue band and a thin red line. The decoration responds to the most characteristic patterns of the Chinese style, with three large plant motifs that start from the edge, alternating with three other minor motifs in perfect harmony. The central scene is made up of a grotesque character with human legs, a bird’s body, a hoof as a left hand, a bird’s head with a long beak and wing-shaped ears; he holds a stick and a bird rests on its beak. To his right, two mammal-headed wading birds, one with a goat’s beard and the other covered with a headdress.

Mancerina: Birds and florals

ALCORA

Typical form of scallop with a central openwork well. Decorated in polychromy with characteristic motifs of the Chinese style (phytomorphs and imaginary birds) and, on the umbo and the opposite side, elements with the appearance of rockery in thick blue outline, and beams of fine parallel red lines.

Mixture profile with semicircular notch on the edge and deep container in the center, used by barbers to soak the beard. Decor floral typical of the Chinese style, with insects and a set of 3 wading birds on landscape occupying the main part of the solero. Polychromy based on orange red and blue, with green and yellow elements on the leaves and flowers.

Plate with 2 figures and a mask

ALCORA

Hacia 1735-1760

Central scene made up of two oriental-looking characters, one of whom, placed on a low table, holds an anthropomorphic mask; on the right, a fantastic bird. The decoration is completed with the characteristic floral bouquets of the Chinese style, which start from the outline of the edge of the plate, and insects flitting around the main characters. Everything in a balanced polychrome.

The central scene is repeated in a fountain at the National Archaeological Museum and, reversed, on a plate from the National Ceramic Museum in Valencia.

Rectangular inkstand, typical of the early Alcora period. Chinese figures as atlantes at the corners. Polychrome decoration with vegetation characteristic of the chinoiserie style.
